FS2 children did some observational drawing yesterday.  We kept it simple (basic shape, surface texture/detail) as their attention spans and concentration are still developing!

Today in y1 (5/6 yr olds) we did some observational drawing. They looked closely at toy cars and tried to draw exactly what they could see. I wanted to get them to look from different points of view, hence the toys rather than the real thing!

Armed with sketchbooks and pencils the y2's (6/7 yr olds) ventured into town today. We looked carefully at buildings in the old parts of town and tried our best to sketch what we saw. I've included a photo of what they were actually looking at and what they drew in response. Some of them really surprised me with the level of detail that they managed to capture.

 

 

Whilst back at school the bigger children got around to painting their papier mache ships. Next week we attach sails (the children decided that they wanted to make them out of fabric, like real sails) and rigging.

Because we didn't get very much time to do observational drawings at the museum last week, today I took in a bike for us to draw. The one at the top is mine, the rest are by the children. I think they've looked very closely and have included an awful lot of detail. The middle one was drawn looking at the bike from an oblique angle - not bad for a 7/8 year old!

We did them in pen on cartridge paper, so no opportunity to rub out mistakes. They were encouraged to look at shape, proportion and relative position ie. where once piece of the bike was in relation to another bit!

Y6 have been drawing trees and shoes!

Y4 went 'fossil' hunting today and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They carefully (for the most part!) excavated the 'fossils' and then had the task of trying to work out just how they might fit together. Lots of discussion ensued as they tried to identify what might be a skull or a rib or a spine. As it dawned on them that they might not have all the requisite pieces they joined other groups and pooled their finds.
