simple perspective

In y4 today we looked at perspective. Using the simple format of a box frame with diagonal, horizontal and vertical lines we were able to create different room, land and cityscapes.

A is for ...

Penguins, polar bears and seals! Today in y3 we drew these 'cos it's been snowing and is very cold! They are also, next week, going to be starting a 'topic' all about cold places. We looked online for pictures so we could add more detail.

elephants

The y3's today had a go at drawing elephants. They did a before sketch and were then shown different ways of creating recognisable images. Can you spot the before pic?

                        

perspective

The y6's have been drawing cityscapes. Previously (last year!) they looked at both tonal and linear perspective and so today they moved on to draw buildings from opposite viewpoints - looking up and looking down.

Y2 have started studying dinosaurs so of course today we used a letter 'A' to draw some!

They drew a 'before' picture at the start (top left) before following simple instructions to create lots of different dinosaur.

Escher & Rousseau

Last week our y5/6's looked at the work of M.C. Escher. We focused on his 'altered' perspective works. We then had a go at drawing, in a very simplified way, our own versions. Rotate your screen or tilt your head to see if we managed it.

Yesterday I took apart a broken chair and reassembled the pieces into the rough shape of a horse. I intend to use it, once it's been fettled a bit, as part of a y3 Trojan horse piece (they are currently studying the Ancient Greeks).

In class the y2's have been learning all about the weather and in Literacy have been writing non-chronological reports about cheetah's, so today, after looking at and discussing Henri Rousseau's painting - 'Surprised!', we drew preliminary sketches (in readiness for paintings next week) of a cheetah in a storm-lashed jungle! 

A is for...

 Today the y2's drew cheetahs. They have been learning all about them in class and did a 'before' picture (top left hand corner). They then followed simple, step by step instructions to enable them to draw more easily recognisable images. We did both standing and running versions. We even detailed the faces. 

Meanwhile, progress on my 'painting' table.

fog

Today the y2's, as part of their studies about weather, looked at artworks that portrayed foggy/misty conditions. They looked at the work of Monet & Whistler in particular. They then had a go at trying to represent fog using black felt pens and layered tracing paper. The second photo shows an atmospheric picture of a misty forest.   

A is for...

In y3 today we drew characters from Ancient Greek myths and legends. We used an 'A' to draw Perseus, The Minotaur and a Cyclops. We were aiming for quick representational images, not realistic portrayals as we are going to be using this technique to aid our story mapping.

illusions

Our Y5's are studying the physical geography of the world, so for art we've flipped the idea on its head and are going to be looking at using art to portray the world in a visually deceptive way ie. not concrete or real - think, Escher, Dali, Magritte etc.
We did lots of drawing today.

rain

Our y2's are learning about 'weather' so today we looked at several artworks. We discussed a japanese print, a Van Gogh drawing, a constable oil study and a contemporary work by Alexander Millar. From these we then had a go at drawing our own comparative pictures - one showing a fine , sunny day and one showing a miserable, grey, rainy day.

Inspired by the Millar painting ("singin' in the rain") I managed a quick doodle.

As a follow-up to the ballerina automaton post from yesterday here's a quick doodle in a similar vein.

Heard an old Queen song last week and have had this doodle rattling around in my head ever since.

today's sketch

I had a hankering to revisit a 'style' from a while back and managed a quick sketch of a couple of rugby players ;

I actually enjoyed the 'process' and might even transfer this onto canvas and paint it up.

Romans and tigers

Y4 made some clay relief sculptures the other day. Using simple rolled slabs they created and assembled shaped pieces to represent Roman legionaries.

Today the y1's drew tigers. They had a go before following step by step instructions to draw several variations.

We then looked at Rousseau's 'Tiger in a Storm' before drawing our own large pictures of a tiger hiding in the long grass.

elephants

Today I showed the y3's a simple way of drawing recognisable images of elephants. They had a go first ( you might be able to spot their 'before' drawings) and then followed step by step instructions to portray elephants from the side, front and rear!

I think they managed - don't you?

cityscapes

Today, the y2's drew cityscapes. First off they had a go at drawing a city themselves - pic 1. We then, step by step, took them through a simple method of representing buildings that might feature in a city - pics 2, 3 before ending up with a 3d scene (pic 4).

I reckon there is some progression between pics 1 and 4.

paint & pirates

Back to basics in y3 with a bit of colour theory. 

 

Whilst in y1 the children drew pirates.

 

Not bad for a 6 year old!

I know some adults who would struggle to draw recognisable pirates.

doodles

Some 'bot doodles from today. They were originally done on scraps of paper which I then stuck into my sketchbook. The first one is in honour of the Mexican keeper who apparently played a blinder in the game against Brazil.

 

In this one I played around with the same pose to create two different pics.
