going round in circles

Tenuously, as part of their Ancient greek studies and with a nod to Pythagoras and Euclid, y3 created some designs and patterns using the 'old' compass-drawn method. 

 

 

 

They actually enjoyed the preciseness of the task and 'magical' way in which the patterns emerged. None of them had ever used pairs of compasses before!

Meanwhile y1 have been making bugs from lollipop sticks and card;

cat & mouse

In FS2, after reading a 'dark, dark tale' about a cat and a mouse, we created collage pictures of the main characters. We drew round plastic templates, cut out and then stuck down the shapes to make our pictures. We added details (whiskers, tails) using pencil crayons.

 

 

collaborative abstracts

Back in the swing of things.The walls of our school are pretty bare at the moment, so, in an effort to brighten up a small corner, one of the classes had a go at creating abstract paintings. On some small spare canvases using acrylics, we painted a variety of shapes and lines. Each child had only one colour and after a couple of minutes of painting we passed the canvases on to another person. We were able to create 14 pics in about an hour. We all began with squares/rectangles, then circles and finally lines and dots.

 

 

Not sure whether to hang them singly or grouped randomly.Will ponder it over the weekend.

life circles

In science we are currently 'doing' life cycles. In art therefore I showed the children how easy it was to create recognisable images from circles (life 'circles'). I demonstrated how they could use the same basic template to create pictures of a wide variety of animals - see my 'here's one I did earlier' pics for the polar bear, dog, lion and elephant. I also showed them that the lion could, by the judicious use of spots, stripes etc., become virtually any big cat.

Have put together a very rough dummy copy of my 4-way story book and have decided to send it off to agents/publishers to gauge the response - wish me luck.

circollz

Have invented a new word - circollz - well it doesn't show up on a google search. It's an amalgamation of circles and collage and actually keeps the phonetic of circle. I'm quite proud of it. Tried out some circollz with the class today, loosely based on Ed Emberley's stuff.
