collaborative painting

Y3 today, in a spirit of cooperation, produced a body of work that, en-masse, loosely represents a spring meadow. They each painted a bit and then passed it on, whilst receiving another piece to add to. This round robin proved quite successful, with the first class painting 'textured' backgrounds for the next class to add flora. A variety of techniques were incorporated including overpainting and scratching out.

Might well add other media including collage, oil pastel or even a bit of stitching!

1st card

Have just drawn a 'bot onto a card. It seemed easier to do it this way than mess around with my not very reliable printer. You can still see the pencil lines. Would love to know what folk think - am probably going to list this and similar in my Etsy shop soon.

The card measures 150mm x 105mm and fits inside a standard envelope.

shapes

This week in Y3, it's shape! Again, trying to make it a little bit more creative, after the usual identification process, how many faces, edges, vertices etc., I gave them a quick tutorial on how to draw 3-D shapes. They were then let loose to see what wondrous images they came up with. (They had to annotate their pics to ensure it looked like they were doing some proper learning!)

This afternoon to tie in with Science ('Helping Plants Grow') and Literacy ('Wordplay'), we drew calligrams.

sketchbook

A quick sketch of a bird 'bot - contemplating the leap into the unknown and maybe having second (and probably third) thoughts about it.

more mathARTmatics

Further fraction work - getting them to understand fractional parts of wholes. We have previously looked at the work of Mondrian and decided (well I did!) to try and create 'recognisable' abstract pictures based on a simple 4x4 grid.

Again, the children had to label (using a key) the fractional breakdown of their compositions. Am thinking of extending this by painting large versions for display around school.

mathARTmatics

Did some fraction work in Numeracy (maths) this morning with my group. Rather than just the mind-numbingly boring writing down of answers to shaded in bits of circles we created pictures. Using the work of Ed Emberley (http://www.edemberley.com/) as an inspiration, we created birds, flowers etc - all the while recognising the fractional parts that went into making them.

Definately should be doing something else!

boy 'bots

Getting away from the girly 'bots briefly (!) - doodled a page of boy robots.

'bot sketches

A couple of 'bot sketches - a page straight out of the sketchbook.

Pen & pencil on paper. Toying with the idea of just putting pages straight from the sketchbook into my etsy shop but not too sure how they'd do. Only one way to find out I suppose.

flowers

Today Y3 did some good old fashioned constructions using pairs of compasses.

Links Art to Science ('helping plants grow') and Numeracy (shape and space). We will also use the idea for Mother's Day cards.

cute 'bots

I like these sketches - pencil & pen - I think they look cute, especially the pair at the top of the page.
